High Speed Deposit Verification System

DEK has launched the next generation Instinctiv, the eagerly awaited update to its popular advanced machine user interface. In the spirit of the mass imaging leader's 'Expect More' philosophy, the new and improved Instinctiv features a wide variety of user benefits designed to maximise machine utilisation, process control and operator efficiency.

Instinctiv V9 HawkEye now with paste percentages displayed on the bar chart for more accurate, process control.

Instinctiv V9 HawkEye now with SPC outputs to enable real time process analysis.

Instinctiv V9 HawkEye now with Data Logging capabilities to a simple-to-understand log file, recording paste percentages of the laest pasted features in each HawkEye area.

HawkEye is an automatic print verification technology that operates at the line beat rate. HawkEye can be configured to assess 100% of printed boards and gives a rapid go/no-go indication for each, meaning that faulty boards can now be automatically isolated in real time.

HawkEye® Key Features

High speed of operation

Straightforward reporting

Simple setup

The system has been designed in direct response to the needs of users who require high-speed deposit verification (paste on pad) without the overheads and complexities coupled with traditional full 2D inspection.

The HawkEye verification routine rapidly scans the board as a series of stripes and collects a tightly defined set of monochrome image data. Comparing these results with the user-defined limits of acceptability, HawkEye quickly indicates whether the board is ready to pass through to component placement or other downstream processing. The user can also program HawkEye to inspect only certain areas of the board where, for example, print deposit density may be particularly high. This allows the user to adjust the total verification cycle time if necessary, and to derive maximum value from the system within the line beat rate.

The new HawkEye print verification system is available as an option on all new DEK automatic machines running the DEK Instinctiv™ user interface and incorporating the ISCAN machine control architecture.

High and ultra high speed camera options without industry equivalent available in the form of the Hawkeye750 camera runing at a maximum 750mm²/second and the HawkEye1700 camera at 1700mm²/second. (Verification speeds based on 250 micron stencil apertures.)

HawkEye® Options

For fully comprehensive print process support, standard HawkEye technology is available in two additional variants to meet precise manufacturing requirements.

HawkEye® 2Di

This solution combines DEK’s verification and inspection technologies to create a comprehensive assessment package. Extending the capability of verification, full 2D inspection functionality enables even closer print process monitoring. By inspecting print quality on determined areas of boards or stencils, 2Di allows operators to both identify when a stencil clean or paste dispense is required and prevent costly defects. Combining this functionality in one cost-effective tool, HawkEye 2Di delivers all the benefits of 100% paste-on-pad control at the line-beat rate.

HawkEye® Bridging

HawkEye’s capabilities can be extended even further with the launch of HawkEye Bridging. Driven by the next-generation Instinctiv™ V9 advanced machine user interface, HawkEye’s quick, easy set-up is complemented by bridge detection at the line-beat rate, ensuring maximum quality of delivery to downstream processes. Delivering comprehensive checking for bridging, the new tool ensures that defective prints are detected in real time.

Operation

HawkEye utilises the DEK InstictivTM V9 user interface to set-up the verification areas and then provide the simple reporting feedback to the operator at runtime.

Set-up

Gerber data is utilised to aid in the set-up of the HawkEye verification areas.

Area scan time is dependent upon the size of the area and the pitch of the components contained within the area. To achieve maximum speed it is best to try and configure verification areas such that they contain similar pitch components. Component pitch is used to calculate the scan speed of the system; areas containing smaller pitch components will be scanned at a higher speed to an area of the same size, which contains larger pitch devices.

Verify Deposit

A verify deposit option now stops the machine after the HawkEye sweep to allow for operator intervention on an initial print to set up levels of acceptable paste deposit.

Deposit levels area reported as graphics, with paste percentages displayed to assist in setting the acceptability levels. HawkEye is still a simple high speed fully automated Go/No-Go measure of deposit quality. Alarm levels should be set such that the system will prevent boards passing down line if the deposit is poor enough to cause process issues later in the manufacturing procedure.

Board view image shows the operator the least pasted object for evaluation.

HawkEye® Alarm

When the system stops on an Alarm point, the operator has the opportunity to review the failed area or browse around the board. Paste painting is used on the camera view showing graphically, the pads in error, using the same colour scheme as the reporting graph.

DEK’s Instinctiv V9 HawkEye option provides paste percentage reporting of the least pasted features during each print cycle.

A zoom function for the camera view is also provided to permit closer inspection of areas of concern.

If the print is acceptable the Error and Warning levels can be further adjusted to fine tune the system. Movement of these alarm levels will also dynamically update the camera view paste painting allowing the operator to see in real time the effect of the level change.

HawkEye® Status

HawkEye verification can be monitored in real time by utilising the HawkEye Status page. This displays the print process with respect to HawkEye.

The Paste Percentages from each HawkEye area can also be monitored in real time by utilising the SPC outputs

HawkEye® paste percentages are given with respect to aperture size.
